Our Favorite Hikes in the Catskill Mountains

The Catskills offer some of the most stunning hikes in New York, from serene forest paths to challenging mountain ascents. Whether you're looking for breathtaking vistas, peaceful woodland walks, or the thrill of rugged terrain, you’re sure to find that close by. We’re partial to our corner of the Great Northern Catskills so here are three of our all-time favorite hikes in our neck of the woods.

Sunset Rock View

1. Artist's Rock, Sunset Rock, and Newman's Ledge via Escarpment Trail (North-South Lake)

Distance: 5.1 miles round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Scenic overlooks, historic significance, lake views

This trail offers an incredible combination of breathtaking views and historical charm. Starting from North-South Lake, the Escarpment Trail takes you through lush forests and along rocky outcrops with dramatic views over the Hudson Valley.

  • Artist’s Rock is your first scenic stop, providing panoramic views that inspired 19th-century painters of the Hudson River School.
  • A short hike further brings you to Sunset Rock, aptly named for its stunning views during the golden hour. This viewpoint offers a tranquil spot to rest and absorb the dramatic beauty of the Catskills.
  • The final highlight of this hike is Newman’s Ledge, where sweeping vistas unfold before you, offering a grand perspective on the landscape stretching out below.

This hike is ideal for those seeking a moderate challenge with rewarding, expansive views at several points along the way.

Huckleberry Point View

2. Huckleberry Point

Distance: 4.6 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Highlights: Secluded viewpoint, wildflowers, quiet beauty

Huckleberry Point offers one of the most tranquil and scenic hikes in the Catskills. The trail meanders through peaceful woods, passing by streams and groves of huckleberry bushes before leading to an open bluff with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The trail is relatively easy, with only a few moderate sections, making it a great option for families or those looking for a shorter, rewarding hike. Once you reach the viewpoint, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular vista that’s perfect for a picnic or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Wildflowers dot the trail in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the verdant landscape.

Sugarloaf Devils Path View

3. The Devil’s Path

Distance: 24.2 miles (point-to-point)
Difficulty: Very Difficult
Highlights: Rugged terrain, steep ascents, panoramic views, Catskill high peaks

For experienced hikers seeking a true challenge, the Devil's Path is one of the most notoriously difficult and thrilling trails in the Catskills. Known for its rugged, rocky terrain and steep ascents, this trail covers the summits of five peaks: Indian Head, Twin, Sugarloaf, Plateau, and West Kill.

The name "Devil's Path" is well-earned due to the strenuous ascents and descents, as well as the narrow ledges and rock scrambles that test even seasoned hikers. However, the rewards are immense, with sweeping vistas and the satisfaction of conquering some of the Catskill's highest peaks.

Most people tackle this hike over two or more days, camping along the way. If you're looking for a challenging adventure and want to experience the untamed beauty of the Catskills, the Devil's Path is an unforgettable experience. There’s also nothing saying you have to do the whole trail, and each of the peaks along the route offer rewarding experiences on their own.

No matter your skill level, these hikes offer the chance to experience the diverse beauty of the Catskills, from peaceful forests and serene lookouts to rugged mountain peaks. Whether you're looking for a peaceful day hike or an epic multi-day adventure, these trails are among the best the Catskills have to offer.
